Dragon Pen Keepers - Fire Zone

Dependent on the zone they work for in Dragon Zoo the Dragon Pen Keepers need a variety of equipment to stay safe from harm.

Today I'll show you what the Dragon Pen Keeper at the Fire Zone looks like.

Firstly, it's the Dragon Zoo Fire Zone. Sounds dangerous, is dangerous! Our pen keepers have been thoroughly trained with a variety of techniques to be able to survive in the pens alongside some of the most fearsome and terrifying fire breathing dragons. The Welsh Inferno has the hottest jets of flame and an aggravated or scared Inferno dragon can cause a lot of damage if they aren’t prepared. Our other fire breather is the English Tyrant. His fire breath isn’t as hot as the Inferno but the Tyrant does come with the added problems of claws, speed and ferociousness. Also, if more than one Tyrant decides to attack at the same time, even the most fire retardant equipment we provide can’t survive the extreme heat of more than one jet of flame.

In the early days of keeping the dragons we needed to try and source the best of the world’s technology as discreetly as possible so as to not draw suspicion but also to ensure that Dragon Zoo would be as safe as possible.

We imported high tensile steel, heat resistant clay tiling (used on space shuttles) and heat resistant glass panelling. The combination of materials came at a great cost but fortunately the budget behind our project was easy enough to come by once we let the people with the money see our dragons!

So, our pens are safe and heat resistant but what about our poor staff that have to go in there and clean them, replace food supplies and check on the dragon’s health? We did some early tests on the suits we were going to use. We bought some fire resistant suits that Formula One racing drivers and pit crew wear. In one of them we stuffed it full of raw meat and dropped it into the Tyrant pen. It took three Tyrants less than 4 seconds to completely incinerate the suit. And this fire protective clothing was some of the best on the planet! We had to come up with a better idea. SO, we make our Dragon Zoo Pen Keepers wear TWO suits.

Mission complete!

These guys and girls are so brave to do what they do but we only employ the best and they absolutely love their jobs. They wear the double layered fireproof nomex suits with fireproof helmets. It is only their skill and animal behaviour expertise which prevents them from being attacked by Tyrants and saving them from the wrath of their claws.

Here are some pictures of the suits that they wear sourced from the internet forums and formula one archives:
